FORT COLLINS, Colo. —  Newswriting, or JTC 210, provides you with the skills and theory needed to assemble stories and draft copy for print and other media.

An Overview
You’ll learn about the history of journalism, AP Stylebook guidelines, information-gathering, story formats, and new ways in which our content reaches readers, listeners and viewers (via blogs and Twitter, for example).

By the end of the semester, at a minimum, you should be able to write and (and publish online) engaging news stories that provide careful sourcing, display accuracy and detail, and meet deadlines.
Also, in today's information-saturated and technologically savvy world, I will also expect you to learn how to post images in your articles and properly cite them.

Expectations for JTC 210
As in the news business, most due dates will be nonnegotiable. Similarly, much of each class session will be run like a newsroom; rather than memorizing stylebooks and dictionaries, you may use such resources during quizzes and writing exercises.

Maintaining a “personal stylebook” will become important in mastering AP style under deadline. Other responsibilities for this course include keeping a portfolio of all notes and graded work and keeping close track of news, both local and global, in preparation for discussions, quizzes and story assignments.

If you don’t already do so, begin reading papers such as the Denver Post, the Coloradoan and the Rocky Mountain Collegian on a regular basis.
